Wright and Vickers lead the way on day two in Holland

 Holland Regatta (24-28 May)

Published: 08/09/2006

Finn sailor Ed Wright and Lizzie Vickers in the Laser Radial are the only two Brits currently in podium positions after day two of the Holland Regatta (24-28 May), which saw improved racing conditions today in Medemblik.

Five more Skandia Team GBR boats in the Laser Radial, Yngling, 49er, RS:X men and 470 women s classes are poised just outside of the top three after the second day of competition, where, after a light start and a few early postponements, wind speeds averaged around 12 knots in the afternoon.

Wright posted two thirds from his two races of the day, to sit just two points behind Greek world number one Emilios Papathanasiou, with the Bournemouth-based sailor, who won the Grade 1 Hyeres regatta last month, pleased with his position so far.

It s a big fleet here about 90 boats, including some of the America s Cup guys so it makes for some interesting racing, Wright explained.

The conditions were good out on the course at around 10 knots so I m pretty pleased with today. My big decision making on the whole was good, I think I got most things right, but I was a bit off with some of my smaller decisions so something to work on for tomorrow!

After a 33 rd from Thursday s first race, Lizzie Vickers day got much better, with a third and a bullet allowing her to discard the first result and finish the day in overall third. Development squad sailor Alison Young is currently just outside of the medal places in fourth, thanks to a sixth from race three.

The 49ers saw their first taste of action this regatta, with three races staged early on the Ijsselmeer today. Skandia Team GBR s sole competitors in this class, Paul Campbell James and Mark Asquith, got off to a solid start with a 1,5,9 to see them in fourth place, just one point from third in the 30-boat fleet.

It was good to get out there today after we were called off yesterday, but the winds were pretty light for us, said Asquith on today s racing. There were some bands of wind across the course and it was a case of whoever caught those was first to the mark and that was that.

Olympic gold medallists Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb, sailing with Emma Rawlinson in the Yngling, are also in fourth place after their opening day s racing on 18 points, they re just two points from the silver medal position, and are currently behind a trio of Dutch boats clearly making the most of their home water advantage.

Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark are fourth in the women s 470 class, posting a 6,5,9 in spite of a few problems getting off the start line, while Nick Dempsey is up to fourth in the RS:X men s fleet with the help of a bullet in race three today. Bryony Shaw and Lucy Horwood both recorded premature starts in their last race of the day to see them slip down the pecking order to 16 th and 24 th respectively from their top ten positions yesterday, while Christine Johnston is in 11 th.

After their protest at the late start yesterday, the Tornados did leave the boat park and got in three races today Andy Walsh and Ed Barney currently lead the Skandia Team GBR challenge in 13th place.

In the Laser class, Paul Goodison is down to eleventh from his overnight joint lead, while development squad sailors Jonny McGovern and Tom Mapplebeck are 40 th in the 470 men s class.
